Comcast Business equipment fee now costs US$200+ per year for a gateway worth less than half that

So, imagine my surprise when I received my monthly Comcast Business bill to discover that Comcast's equipment fee has increased another US$2 per month. Not -- of course not. That's more than US$200 per year for equipment worth less than half that *at retail.*

"IMPORTANT INFORMATION: As business costs continue to rise, please be advised that effective June 1, 2019, the rate for the Comcast Business modem monthly rental fee has increased to $16.95 per month. To learn more, please visit business.comcast.com/pricechanges or contact us at 800-391-3000."

The web page referenced by Comcast contains absolutely no useful information related to this issue but does carry the following ever-so-useful disclaimer:

"Note: This is not a comprehensive list of all taxes and fees that may be found on your bill."

This from a vendor who refuses to allow any *business* with a static network (and most likely an outrageously priced subnet lease) from purchasing and managing their own equipment.

Never mind that I'm under contract through 30 June 2021. But I guess Comcast isn't subject to such business agreements.

My city's (Saint Paul, MN) regulator, the Office of Cable Communications regulates only the city's cable television franchise, punting all internet regulation matters to the US FCC. Well, now, isn't that convenient.

Very cool, if you don't have a static IP address then you just need to look into a modem that has phone capabilities and internet service capabilities. Sometimes I have seen people use two modems. One for phone service and one for internet service. This, of course, is your choice. Another thing to consider is that if you are using the Comcast Business app, you will be able to see your equipment but you may not be able to reset it or run diagnostics on the modem.  Our aim is always to deliver the best possible service and we want you to be happy with how your services are working. Did you have any questions or concerns about owned equipment?

I have basic internet, I don't believe it has a static IP.

I have been with Comcast for 3 1/2 years now, and due to my own oversight, never really watched out for this.  I should have known.  I have spent over 625 for "equipment fees", meaning the modem, for something that is worth 100 at most.  I have had the same gateway the whole time.

I would rather just buy my own gateway and pay 150 or 200.  What modems or gateways work with the Comcast service?

I went back and looked at the charges for equipment, after calling in to inquire about porting my phone service.  Right now, I just use the business internet.  When the rep told me the equipment charge for phone was 24.95 a month per line, and the modem charge was 16.95 a month.

If you have a list of modems that will work, i would be greatly appreciative.

Hello, thank you for taking the time out of our day to send us a message over forums. It is always great working with all of our valued customers here! I appreciate that you have been with us for about 3.5 years. It means a lot to us that you would stick with us this long 🙂 Our modems are designed to deliver a customized experience for business service and are a great feature and benefit. I can understand wanting to save some of your hard-earned money and go with an owned modem though. You can see a list of compatible business modems using this link, (https://business.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/comcast-business-cable-modem-device-compatibility). Do you know if you have a static IP address? I wanted to ask because you will need a leased Comcast Business modem to use a static IP. If you have any further questions or if you need me to take a close look at your account please let me know.
