Employer requires Static IP

Hi,

I work from Philadelphia (PA) for a South African business as a data analyst. My employer requires that I have a static IP. Last week Comcast Business installed my router and gave me a gateway IP, usable IP, subnet and 2 DNS addresses. My employer unblocked my usable IP address on their side and asked me to test.

I work on a laptop which was issued to me by my employer (i.e. locked down) and connect to their network via Foticlient VPN. My household also uses the Comcast Business internet for streaming etc.

What setups must I do on my laptop to be able to connect to my employer using the "usable" static IP assigned to me by Comcast Business? I have 0 knowledge of networking. Reading some of the help available has been of no help and only confused me more.

Urgent help would GREATLY be appreciated. Thank you .

Hello @RoelofFx! Thanks for reaching out on our Business Forums. Your business is important to us, and we truly appreciate you choosing Comcast Business as your provider. Please know we can troubleshoot Static IP issues, but when it comes to configuration with your laptop and connecting to your employer, that would be out of our demarc and would have to go through your employer's IT department.

Wow, thanks. That is a worthless answer. Not even a suggestion to something to read that can help me?

Have a great day.

@RoelofFx, I absolutely understand your concerns and wish there was more we could do. If you're having issues with your Static IPs, we can absolutely assist with that, but we would not be able to assist or provide any suggestions with the configuration of the IPs to your employer network/laptop.

Thank you and I hope you have a great day as well.

@RoelofFx

Howdy,

The first thing you might want to do is to type in "what's my IP" into a google web browser, this should TELL you what your static IP is (assuming you've actually been assigned a Static IP, did you specifically request and pay for one in your Comcast Business account?). You can also try websites such as:
https://whatismyipaddress.com/

or

https://www.ipchicken.com/

and many other web sites. Once you KNOW your static IP, you should inform your employer and/or their IT department to make sure they are using the CORRECT static IP address, and unblock it from their end.

I highly recommend you DO THIS to double check that you are providing them the accurate information, as sometimes it's confusing what is your 'usable' static IP address, vs. the 'gateway' address or other #'s that may have been provided to you. Good Luck, and you may find better support if you CALL Comcast business support via the phone.

Cheers,

Daniel

OH, and also Comcast does indeed have a general information page you can find here:

Thank you for the reply MacMindConsulting.

I did use the https://business.comcast.com/support/article/internet/using-a-static-ip article, some others as well, thx.

I set my static IP in IP settings (Ethernet setting). The IPv4 address was set to the "usable" IP provided by Comcast. The subnet prefix length to 30 (255.255.255.252), the IPv4 gateway to my gateway address (different to the "usable" ip) and I changed the DNS servers to those provided by Comcast. Restarted everything (modem, laptop...the works).

I checked ipconfig on CMD and the IP refects correctly.

Doing an IP check on Google shows a completely different IP. My static starts with 75. The one on Google starts with 168.
