PPTP connection via xfinity public hotspot

I am unable to make a PPTP VPN connection to my work netword through a xfinity public hotspot.  I know everything is set up correctly at both ends, as I have no trouble making the connection at home (using my xfinity home internet service).  In addition, if I enable the wireless hotspot on my cell phone, connect my laptop to that, and then make the VPN connection, it works fine.  That's not an optimal solution though as I'm chewing up my cell phone data.

I travel to this location frequently during the summer, and I'm pretty sure I used to be able to make a PPTP VPN connection using this hot spot last summer.  The hotspot is about 50' away on the telephone pole in front of our summer house, so signal quality is not an issue.

We also have a Comcast "business class" account at work and I've tried logging in using those credentials and that doesn't work either.

The wireless hotspot seems to work ok in all other respects, (although it's a bit slow, my 4G LTE connection is faster).

Any ideas?  I'm on a semi-vacation and don't relish the idea of dealing with Comcast tech support.

Thanks, but I don't think the link you quoted applies.  First, it is on the residental support site and I'm trying to connect with a business account.  Second, it says nothing about connecting via wifi.  Third, what consitutes "personal, non-commercial use"?  If an employee accessing an employer's VPN is considered a "commercial" use, then I'd guess that quite a few xfinity customers are in violation.  In any event, it seems that a valid use for a business class customer would be to access a work network via VPN.

As I mentioned, I am attempting to connect to our work VPN via a public xfinity hotspot.  I do not have internet service at our summer place.  I have xfinity residental service at home, and we have their so-called "buisness class" service at work (which is less reliable than my home service).

I'm certain that I connected to our VPN last summer, so something must have changed in the hotspot's configuration (which of course, I have no way of accessing).  The only difference is that this year I have a different laptop and signed in using my busness account.  There doesn't seem to be any way to deregister this mac address so I can sign in using my residental account.

Hello dcaton and welcome,

It appears that VPN connection is only supported through residential wifi-service, per this information. Apparently, there is a violation of applicable terms of service and policies using any Comcast Business XfinityWifi hotspot for VPN.

I would be interested if you could share what Comcast Business Internet Gateway you are using at your summer place. If by some chance you are using a new DPC3939B, you might want to try connecting up to your VPN using the inherent private wifi.

Hope this helps you out.

Apparently "personal, non-commerical use" means that you are using your residential service.

If an employee accessing an employer's VPN is considered a "commercial" use, then I'd guess that quite a few xfinity customers are in violation.  In any event, it seems that a valid use for a business class customer would be to access a work network via VPN.

Point well taken, however, ALL business class customer use their inherent business class internet service interconnecting their Comcast Wired Gateway to VPN devices, not through XfinityWifi hotspot. This is the primary difference that I see. This link might provide you with some updated interconnect information for your new laptop.

As I mentioned, I am attempting to connect to our work VPN via a public xfinity hotspot.  I do not have internet service at our summer place.  I have xfinity residental service at home, and we have their so-called "buisness class" service at work (which is less reliable than my home service).

As you know, there are 3 means by which to login to XfinityWifi : 1.) Comcast Business email and password, 2.) Comcast Non-Business (Residential) email and password, or 3.) Non-Comcast user. So if you are unable to connect to your VPN via your business email and password, have you tried option 2.)?

I'm certain that I connected to our VPN last summer, so something must have changed in the hotspot's configuration (which of course, I have no way of accessing).  The only difference is that this year I have a different laptop and signed in using my busness account.  There doesn't seem to be any way to deregister this mac address so I can sign in using my residental account.

I was under the distinct understanding that if you use the option 2.) login link, with your residential email and password, you should be able to register again using your residential email designation. This will put you on the "personal, non-commerical use" segment, and if there have been no XfinityWifi changes since you could connected last year using your residential service, it should work.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no way to unregister the mac address of a device once you''ve logged into a public hotspot, at least not without calling customer support.
